What We Do . . .

This year, 600 Jewish families will leave their personal and professional contacts behind, arrive in Toronto hoping to make essential business networking connections in their new homeland. To address their needs, UJA Federation has funded the JumpStart program in order to effectively integrate these newcomers into the Canadian labour market.

The immigrants of "today" gain access to Canada because of their advanced education, experience and expertise. Yet once they arrive and settle here, these skills do not necessarily translate into the ability of those immigrants to work within their career choice. The most frequently cited reason for newcomer unemployment is lack of Canadian experience. No matter how "job ready" newcomers may be, they do not have access, in Toronto, to the invaluable social and professional networks naturally developed over a Canadian’s educational and employment life. As a result, newcomers often cannot even get a foot in the door and are forced to take low paying "survivor" jobs to support their families.

At this time, JIAS Toronto is looking to the Jewish community to serve as the "missing link" for newcomers by helping them recreate the "connections" they left behind. We can, with your help, create more "win-win" opportunities for both newcomers and the working community. Through JumpStart, new immigrants gain access to employment and, at the same time, enjoy the beginnings of an affiliation with our community at large. As well, employers gain valuable and talented employees while engaging in the highest level of tzedekahhelping others to become self-reliant and fulfilled
